New Graders To Improve Gravel Roads
The Northern Cape Fleet Management and Trading Entity (NCFMTE) purchased 20 new ELB graders which will be distributed to the various Districts. The Frances Baard District Office will receive three graders, John Taolo Gaetsewe District will receive four, Namaqua District will receive five, Pixley ka Seme and Z.F Mgcawu Districts will each receive four graders.
These graders will be replacing part of the ageing graders. Some of the old graders were in operation since the 1980’s and 1990’s. In terms of the standardised Visual Condition Index rating scale, the department has a responsibility to improve in terms of the driving quality, gravel thickness, the surface drainage and side drainage of our unpaved roads in the province.
The graders will assist in maintaining and improving the driving quality of our gravel roads; and hopefully reduce the risk of accidents on gravel roads. The newly bladed gravel roads will definitely be of benefit to farmers and the farming communities at large including tourists who are looking forward to that unique dirt roads adventure. The optimal and efficient use of these graders is government’s contribution to ensure that we create a better life and safer gravel roads for the citizens of the province.
