CONVERSION OF A DORMATORY INTO OFFICE ACCOMODATION

The Department is converting an old dormitory into office space for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). The Springbok staff of DSAC is working from home since 2019 due to a fire that erupted and resulted in the offices burning down. A local school in Springbok donated their dormitories to be used as office space.

After this donation the Department conducted an assessment, on this facility which was vacant for a long period. Thereafter a cost estimate was prepared by the Chief Quantity Surveyor. A contractor was appointed on 29 June 2021, to commence with the conversion. The work was completed within six weeks.

During the current financial year (2021/2022) the client department had budget to complete only the ground floor. There were no challenges in the project, the contractor completed before the given completion date. The quality of work was good, and the client was pleased with the work produced.

The scope of work includes the replacement of vinyl tiles with porcelain tiles, painting of the internal walls and ceilings, electrical works, replacing damaged sanitary fittings. It also included the installation of a paraplegic toilet, shelves for a storeroom and built-in cupboards for the kitchen. The second phase of the project will commence during the next financial year.
