Road Closed Due To Heavy Rainfall And Damage

Due to the recent rainfall sections of the R31 remains closed since Wednesday evening (27 January 2021). The rainfall caused severe damage to the road and it was closed 10 kilometers before the Danielskuil turn-off when driving from Kimberley and up until 2 kilometers after the T-junction turn-off to Danielskuil.

The alternative route from Kimberley to Kuruman is to travel on the N12 to Warrenton, Jan Kempdorp, Taung, Vryburg then to Kuruman. Furthermore we do not recommend the use of gravel roads as a detour, especially after heavy rains. We decided to close the road immediately due to the high risk and we aim to avoid any fatalities. However this will not be possible if the public does not cooperate and adhere to the warning and media alerts.

To date the department managed to successfully cordon off the damaged section of the R31, conduct an assessment determining the extent of the flood damage construction is expected to commence today, 2 February 2021.

We anticipate with expected rainfall that certain low laying areas and gravel roads in the province may once again experience flooding. Road users should at all times be extra vigilant, increase their traveling time, be patient and safe; consider the value of their life as well as that of fellow road users and pedestrians. Any other flooded roads can be reported on the following Whatsapp line: 066 581 5626 providing the supporting footage and location.
