QUALITY HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE SET TO CHANGE LIVES

The Northern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works (DRPW) is proud to announce that the construction of the new Schmidtsdrift Clinic is complete. This marks a significant milestone in the department’s commitment to improving healthcare access and strengthening community development across the province. Valued at R48.99 million, this state-of-the-art healthcare facility has been designed to provide modern, accessible, and quality healthcare services to the residents of Schmidtsdrift and surrounding areas. The project demonstrates government’s ongoing investment in essential infrastructure that improves lives while creating opportunities for local economic growth. 

A Modern Healthcare Facility for the Community 

The new clinic has been developed as a comprehensive healthcare hub equipped to meet the needs of the community. The main facility includes four consulting rooms, a dedicated emergency consulting room, a medicine dispensary, an archive, and a server room to support efficient service delivery. To ensure long-term sustainability and operational resilience, the project also includes: Three fully constructed staff houses to accommodate healthcare professionals. Back-up water storage and electricity systems to ensure uninterrupted services. Solar energy infrastructure to supplement power supply and reduce dependence on the national grid. Enhanced site infrastructure, including perimeter fencing, internal access roads, a guard house, and landscaped surroundings.

Excellent Progress Towards Completion

All major construction work on both the clinic and staff accommodation has been successfully completed. Although the project experienced an initial delay due to the late issuance of a construction permit, effective collaboration among all stakeholders ensured that progress remained on track. The contractor has demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the project, maintaining quality standards and driving the development toward successful completion within the agreed contract parameters. 

Driving Local Economic Empowerment 

Beyond delivering critical healthcare infrastructure, the Schmidtsdrift Clinic project has made a meaningful contribution to local socio-economic development. Over the 18-month construction period, five local subcontractors were engaged, while 20 local labourers were employed directly on the project. The workforce reflected the department’s commitment to inclusivity, comprising 14 men, 6 women, and 8 young people. Skills development formed a key component of the project’s community impact. Local workers benefited from accredited training opportunities, including First Aid training for two participants and Storekeeping training for one individual. These initiatives ensure that valuable skills remain within the community long after construction has been completed.
