MEC FUFE MAKATONG COMMEMORATED MANDELA DAY IN KURUMAN

On Thursday, 18 July 2024, as the world celebrated Nelson Mandela day, MEC Fufe Makatong joined the community of John Taolo Gaetsewe District, in lending a helping hand. This year’s Nelson Mandela Day is commemorated under the theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”. 

MEC Makatong stated that she was inspired by Nelson Mandela’s words in addressing the scourge of poverty in our communities when he said; “Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.” These inspirational words are a stark reminder that we must do more to fight the scourge of poverty and inequality. 

The Head of the Department, Dr. Johny MacKay, handed over school shoes to the principal of the Vlakfontein Primary School. Dr. MacKay inspired the learners to be committed and persevere in their schooling. He quoted the legendary President Nelson Mandela, who once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” He elaborated on his humble beginnings as a child who grew up in the ghetto and due to perseverance he obtained his doctorate. MEC Fufe Makatong accompanied by HOD, Dr. Johny MacKay, the Chief Director of Roads, Mr. Itumeleng Bulane, the District Manager of JTG, District Office, Ms. Modise, handed over 9 laptops to Baitiredi Technical and Commercial High School. 

"I visited the school last year during the Executive Council School Re-opening program, and I made a commitment that I will assist with some of the learners' needs. This year, I received a message that there was a break-in at the school, and teachers' laptops were stolen. I made a commitment that I would buy the teachers' new laptops. Today, I am delivering to that promise,” said MEC Makatong. This is part of equipping the school and modernising it. Tata Mandela's iconic quote states: "Never stop, until your dreams turn into your reality." 

Later that day MEC Makatong and Senior Management dedicated more than #67 minutes in Gantatelang village to construct a place of residence for a family who lost their dwelling in a blaze. In her persuit to eradicate poverty and inequality; also donated furniture and household items to the family. Tata Madiba once said, "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest." It is in our hands to change the world.
