Campbell Road Creates Jobs and Improves Lives

The Department of Roads and Public Works (DRPW) proudly announces the successful completion of the Rooting Out the Dust (ROD) Programme project, which involved the paving of a 1.65 km section of the Campbell Access Road (MR803), from N8 Road to Campbell.

Commencing in February this year, the project has delivered a durable, low-maintenance road surface designed to accommodate both heavy and light vehicles. Beyond infrastructure improvement, the initiative has made a tangible social impact by creating 39 job opportunities, of which 23 were women and 30 were youth. Local residents actively participated in the paving process, while small sub-contractors were appointed to execute portions of the work in line with the project’s labour-intensive approach — ensuring that the benefits extended directly to the community.

The newly paved road will greatly enhance traffic flow, improve road safety, and reduce maintenance costs. By upgrading intersections and improving the road surface quality, the project effectively mitigates dust pollution and pothole erosion. Previously, heavy vehicle movement generated significant dust, reducing visibility for motorists and affecting nearby residents’ air quality. With this upgrade, the community can now enjoy a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable environment.

In addition to road improvements, stormwater management infrastructure has been significantly upgraded. The drainage system was enhanced to a higher-capacity design, reducing the risk of flooding and road degradation during heavy rainfall. A newly constructed 900-metre pedestrian sidewalk now offers a safe and convenient walkway for residents, particularly those living along the route.

The DRPW remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the people of the Northern Cape through sustainable infrastructure development, inclusive job creation, and community upliftment.
